Fran De Miguel

Born in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Fran De Miguel is a distinguished contemporary Spanish painter. He belongs to the pivotal generation of Canarian artists who emerged following the establishment of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of La Laguna, where he completed his academic training between 1985 and 1990.

Artistic Career

Over a career spanning more than three decades, De Miguel has forged a singular, independent path dedicated to the medium of painting. His work has been widely exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions across Spain and on the international stage, with notable showcases in:

* Spain * Egypt * The Netherlands * Mexico * Japan

This global footprint establishes him as a key ambassador of Tenerife’s contemporary art scene abroad.

Artistic Practice

At the core of De Miguel's practice lies a rigorous commitment to material experimentation. Eschewing standard commercial mediums, the artist formulates his own pigments and paint mixtures—a meticulous process that yields unparalleled tactile textures, luminosity, and chromatic depth.

His canvases are highly regarded for:

* Rich and vibrant colour harmonies * Expressive, heavily layered tactile surfaces * Ambitious, large-scale compositions * A harmonious balance between abstraction and emotional resonance * A profound, deliberate exploration of light and matter

Through these elements, his paintings invite the viewer to engage with colour not merely as a visual medium, but as a physical presence and an emotive language.

Notable Exhibition

In 2023, De Miguel presented a landmark exhibition at the historic Antiguo Convento de Santo Domingo in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. This showcase of monumental, large-scale works served as a definitive testament to his mature artistic voice. The exhibition garnered widespread critical acclaim, notably from the distinguished art critic Joaquín Castro, who praised the originality of De Miguel's pictorial research and his vital contribution to contemporary Canarian art.

Position within Canarian Contemporary Art

Today, Fran De Miguel is recognized as a seminal figure of the generation that expanded the horizons of contemporary painting in the Canary Islands through technical innovation and a deeply personal visual vocabulary. While his practice honors the rich heritage of Canarian painting, it remains a fiercely individual exploration of colour, materiality, and expressive abstraction.
