La niña del yoyo by Celestino Mesa

Children and play—those pastimes of yesteryear now rarely seen. Here, children play with yo-yos, offering childhood and innocence as the crowning touch to the series entitled El tiempo que no está.

With childhood as the protagonist of each canvas and play as the central motif around which the work takes shape, the artist emotionally engages the viewer by recreating a past capable of stirring individual memories, while intentionally depersonalizing the children’s faces. In contrast to a purely realist aesthetic, this approach invites a deeper empathetic resonance from the audience, allowing viewers to readily recognize themselves within these softened, generalized features.

The rich palette of vibrant colors seems to echo the distant laughter of children, while an impeccable handling of light and loose, expressive brushwork imbue the composition with dynamism. Concurrently, overlapping planes delineated by straight lines and shifting perspectives heighten the illusory feeling of encountering fragments of longing, playfully juxtaposing memory with the manifold possibilities that the future holds.

Mesa speaks to a reality that is nearly vanished, yet still palpably present within the spirit of so many today: a visual language accessible to all, yet one that strikes a particularly poignant chord across specific generations. Ultimately, it is an ode to nostalgia for the “time that is no longer”—childhood, its games, and its rules.
