Biography
Amparo Modino is a contemporary Spanish artist based in Tenerife, specializing in figurative portraiture. With more than twenty years of artistic practice, she has developed a distinctive body of work centred on the psychology of the human face and the expressive power of the gaze. Working from intuition, observation, and experimentation, she seeks to reveal the emotional depth and inner identity of her subjects rather than simply reproducing their physical appearance.
Although largely self-taught, Modino has complemented her artistic development through private studies in drawing and painting, focusing on portraiture and figurative techniques. She began her artistic activity in the late 1990s as a live-event artist at European art festivals in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Since 2003, she has worked professionally as a portrait artist while expanding her practice into oil painting, acrylics, pastel, and mural painting.
Artistic Practice
Amparo Modino’s work explores the intersection of portraiture, identity, and contemporary visual culture. Rather than treating portraiture as a documentary exercise, she transforms familiar faces into symbolic and emotionally charged images through expressive colour, bold contrasts, and a language influenced by contemporary and pop aesthetics.
Her work is characterised by:
* Contemporary figurative portraiture. * Psychological exploration of the human face. * Expressive use of colour and contrast. * Influences from pop culture and iconography. * Oil, acrylic, pastel, and mural techniques. * A balance between realism and emotional interpretation.
One of her ongoing series, Iconic Women, reinterprets well-known cultural figures. Rather than focusing on celebrity, the series examines qualities such as resilience, vulnerability, determination, and personal strength, creating visual dialogues between the lives of these women and the artist’s own experience.

Artist Statement
For Amparo Modino, portraiture is a means of understanding the human condition. Through colour, gesture, and expression, she seeks to reveal what lies beneath the visible surface, transforming each face into a space where memory, identity, and emotion converge. Her paintings invite viewers to look beyond appearance and engage with the universal experiences reflected in every gaze.
