Untitled, 2021. From the series Ex-sistencia. Oil on canvas, 86 x 94 cm. A series begun in 2019 and on which I continue to work.
In his book La ciudad desnuda. Variaciones en torno a Un hombre que duerme de Georges Perec (1936-1982), Alberto Ruiz de Samaniego discusses the character created by Perec—who "one day wishes to say 'Leave me in peace! Leave me alone!' (...) and wanders the streets for two years," in Perec's own words—and his decision to distance himself from everything, remaining in his home, his refuge, and becoming "almost non-existent," "unapparent."
He thus contrasts the term Ex-sistence—that is, being outside of oneself—with In-sistence, the state in which the character might be situated: being entirely within oneself or, at the very least, creating spaces of retreat or intimacy, while opting for silence, passivity, and indifference.
