Brushstrokes & Backswing

Everyone watches the ball. I watch the earth it leaves behind. So I built this turf in ridges of thick paint, dragged and cut with the knife, and where the club bites through I let the ground burst open — magenta, violet, acid green — the colours the grass secretly holds when the low Atlantic light crosses Abama. The player stays half-dissolved on purpose: that swing belongs to anyone who has stood on this coast with the surf breaking white behind them. Read the surface from the bottom edge upward, slowly.
